UCSD CRAFTS CENTER CLOSURE

CALL TO ACTION

Colleagues, artists, art lovers:

I have developed a page to inform and call to action persons interested in the recent announcement of the closure of the UCSD Crafts Center - a vital art resource for San Diego, art, and culture.

Please read the letter from UCSD, the contact list for voices to be heard, and some links below for how art and science do meet at UCSD.  If you can reach out or know someone who can, to possible endowers or benefactors of this art center please share that, please keep me in the loop.  Also, I would very much like to post video of creativity happening at the Crafts Center, so please send over.

Please visit my Facebook page for other responses and updates.

**Attention!  New Video of the UCSD Craft Center in Action** Keep this center alive!

Valuable Comments from colleagues, artist and art lovers:

"   a hugely valuable resource for the San Diego community has been taken away without replacement. If the Math department needed renovation, they'd find an alternate solution than closing it down for a year. Educational institutions will only see the value of arts and creativity programs if they hear from those impacted by decisions they make."

"I'm writing to express my deep concern over the news of the closing of the UCSD crafts center for a year due to "budget shortfalls" and "renovations." My first experience with the CC was in the 1970s when my graduate program counted classes taken there as elective credits. I attribute my ability to complete the Ph.D., in part, to the classes I took and the innovative and creative way of thinking that was fostered there. I've continued to take classes at the CC from time to time as have many of my friends. The Center has been a significant benefit to the larger San Diego community for years. There is a huge deficit of creativity in our society these days. Arts and crafts are not valued as they once were. Arts programs are cut from primary and secondary schools with a focus on "the three Rs" and test scores, to the detriment of students and society in general. Please don't let the Craft Center fall by the wayside as well. Find an alternative venue while the renovations are taking place, like you would if the math building or engineering building needed renovations. Keep the Craft Center alive!"

"UCSD has no endowment for the liberal arts as most of their alumni are still alive!. Funding for all the project comes from corporations that support research. The arts simply does not have that going for it and so there are no funds for the arts. The future seems to be to combine art and science funding as a way to fund the arts. Making things as an engineer might be the future for the arts... I try to envision a new type of creative engineer!"

The Center for Design and Geopolitics and The Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination (Sheldon Brown) have a home in the new Structural/ Materials Engineering Building at UC San Diego (UCSD) . This is a new opportunity for art and science to merge at UCSD and we hope for better results than at Calit2 which has struggled with funding and seems more science than art.

My kindest regards to all those who can participate,

UCSD
CAMPUS NOTICE
University of California, San Diego

OFFICE OF THE ASSISTANT VICE CHANCELLOR-STUDENT LIFE

September 25, 2012

ALL ACADEMICS, STAFF AND STUDENTS AT UC SAN DIEGO

SUBJECT: Closure of UCSD Crafts Center

The UCSD Crafts Center will be closed during the 2012-13 academic year pending resolution of budget shortfalls and renovations needed to the Crafts Center facility. Workshops, non-credit classes and art exhibits through the Crafts Center will not be offered this academic year.

The Crafts Center is funded by the University Centers, which operates the Price Center and Student Center facilities. Risings costs have triggered the need for budget reductions in the University Centers, which is funded primarily by the University Centers student fee. Decisions about reductions were based on students’ priorities and their usage of University Centers programs, service and facilities.

Anticipated expenses related to facility renovations were factored into the decision. A recent facility condition analysis of the Crafts Center identified $1.5 million in needed renovation work.

This year, the University Centers will work with student leaders in the University Centers Advisory Board, Associated Students and Graduate Student Association to explore options for funding, renovating and reopening the Crafts Center.

Sincerely,

Gary Ratcliff
